We run an online store of our own as well as building them, which is a useful corrective. It is much harder to be casual about checkout friction or a stale product page when you have felt the consequences yourself.
The part most stores get wrong
Products that are no longer available are the commonest and quietest problem in ecommerce. A page that ranks well and sells something you cannot deliver costs you twice: the refund, and the customer.
A page that has earned its ranking is worth keeping. The fix is to put current stock behind the same URL rather than deleting it and starting again from nothing — a good ranking takes months to build and seconds to throw away.
We set stores up so that expiring or seasonal products have an obvious end state, instead of relying on somebody remembering.
